Virtual consultations vs in-person visits: when to choose which
By Bird of Paradise Skin Therapy | October 16, 2026
My Virtual In Depth Consultation is 40 minutes, it’s $100, and you’ll get a detailed skincare summary by email within 72 hours. If you want a thorough intake, product and routine planning, or a smart follow-up without driving around Woodland Hills, virtual is usually the better call. If you need hands-on diagnostics, a same-day treatment, patch testing, or anything that truly requires being seen in person, in-clinic wins.
Quick filter: If you can send clear close-ups and hop on a call, virtual gets you a real plan fast. If you’re worried about a new or changing spot, or you want something done the same day in a treatment room, don’t force virtual.
I’m based in Woodland Hills in the Warner Center and Topanga Canyon corridor, and I see a lot of busy schedules. Virtual consults are a great way to skip an extra trip off the 101, especially if you’re coming from Calabasas, Canoga Park, West Hills, Tarzana, or Encino and you want guidance before you commit to an in-person appointment.
Virtual In Depth Consultation vs in-person: what we’re actually comparing
A Virtual In Depth Consultation is a structured intake and planning appointment done over video. I look at what your skin is doing right now, but I also pay attention to the stuff that tends to drive skin changes over time, like your daily habits, the products you rotate through, and the patterns you’ve noticed (breakouts that cluster, dryness that flares, pigmentation that lingers, that kind of thing). The point is clarity and a routine you can actually follow.
An in-person skin consult adds the physical layer. I can see texture in real life, assess more angles, and catch details that cameras sometimes blur. And if you’re already in the room, we can often move straight into hands-on care, like a facial or a treatment that needs equipment.
I’m not here to talk you into one option. I’m here to get you the best outcome with the least wasted time and the fewest wrong turns.
The trade-offs that actually matter (accuracy, time, and results)
Let’s be honest about what virtual does well and where it has limits.
Accuracy: in-person has the edge, but virtual can still be detailed
In-person gives me the clearest read because I’m not fighting camera lighting, compression, or a phone that insists on “beauty mode.” I can also decide right there if something needs a closer look beyond aesthetics. Virtual relies on the quality of your photos and how well we communicate, so I’ll ask more questions than you might expect. That’s not me being nosy. It’s how I make a virtual plan feel like an in-person one.
Time and convenience: virtual is hard to beat in Woodland Hills traffic
If you’re juggling work, kids, or you just don’t want to burn your weekend sitting on the 101, virtual is a clean win. I can do the deep intake, answer your questions, and build your routine without you having to make a separate trip just to talk.
Results: the plan is the point
A virtual consult isn’t a facial, so the “result” isn’t that immediate post-treatment glow. The result is a plan that makes sense for your skin and your life, plus realistic next steps. People come to me when they feel stuck, like they’ve tried a bunch of things and nothing is consistent. I’m big on practical home care. One client put it perfectly: they loved that I’m “instructional leaving me w/practical things I can do at home.” That’s exactly the vibe of a strong virtual consult.
“In just 60 days, I've seen a drastic improvement in my skin's appearance and overall health.”

One more real-world difference: virtual is great for routine building and follow-ups, but it can’t replace hands-on work for concerns that need immediate in-clinic assessment or equipment-based treatments.
A simple way to decide: 6 signs virtual consultations are your best next step
- You want a routine refresh and you’re tired of guessing what to buy next.
- You’re dealing with breakouts or pigmentation and you need a plan you can stick to, not a drawer full of half-used products.
- You’ve got an event or a deadline and you want to get on the right track now, then book in-person at the right time.
- You’re coming in from Calabasas, Encino, or West Hills and you want to avoid an extra drive just to talk through options.
- You’ve had skin services before and you want follow-up guidance between visits.
- You can take clear photos in good light and hop on a video call without distractions.
Choose in-person instead if you want hands-on diagnostics, you’re hoping for an immediate in-clinic treatment the same day, or you have something that simply shouldn’t be handled by video alone.
How my 40-minute Virtual In Depth Consultation works (and what to prep)
I run virtual consults like I run in-person care: with a lot of questions, a clear plan, and no pressure to buy a million things. In the session, we’ll talk through what you’re using now, what your skin has done in the past, and what you want it to do next. Then I take what we covered and send you a detailed summary by email within 72 hours so you’re not relying on memory.
Bring this to your virtual consultation
- Photos in natural light: front view plus both sides. Close-ups of the main concern help a lot.
- Your full product list: cleanser, moisturizer, SPF, serums, actives, masks, and any spot treatments.
- Medication and supplement notes, plus any recent changes that might connect to skin shifts.
- A short goal list: what you want to change first (breakouts, texture, dryness, dark spots, sensitivity).
And yes, a virtual consult can absolutely point you toward an in-person visit. Sometimes the best use of virtual is getting you to the right appointment faster, instead of booking the wrong thing and starting over.

Why people stick with me at Bird of Paradise Skin Therapy (and a next step)
I’ve been doing this work for 14 years, and what I hear over and over is that people want honesty, not hype. They want someone who can explain the “why, ” give them practical steps, and keep it realistic. That’s how I work in the treatment room, and it’s how I work virtually too.
A lot of my long-time clients come back after life happens. Surgeries, stress, busy seasons, falling off their routine. I don’t do guilt. I help you restart in a way that’s doable.
“Monique never makes you feel bad. She’s always welcoming and ready to do your scheduled procedure and give you lots of information about improving your skin.”

If you’re ready for a plan: book a Virtual In Depth Consultation, come with clear photos and your product list, and tell me what’s bothering you most right now. If I hear anything that needs in-person care first, I’ll tell you straight.

Virtual In Depth Consultation FAQ (quick answers)
What happens during a Virtual In Depth Consultation?
We’ll meet over video for 40 minutes. I’ll ask about your skin history, what you’re using, your habits, and what you want to change. After the call, I put everything into a detailed skincare summary and email it to you within 72 hours so you have clear next steps.
Is a Virtual In Depth Consultation as effective as an in-person skin consult?
For routine planning, product guidance, and follow-ups, virtual can be very effective, especially when you send clear photos and we can talk without rushing. In-person is the better choice when I need hands-on assessment, when a concern can’t be evaluated well on camera, or when you want an immediate in-clinic treatment.
How long does a Virtual In Depth Consultation take and how much does it cost?
It’s 40 minutes and it’s $100.
Do I need to upload close-up photos before a Virtual In Depth Consultation?
I strongly recommend it. Good natural light photos and close-ups help me see what your camera may not capture well on a live video call, especially with texture, redness, and pigmentation.
Can a Virtual In Depth Consultation lead to same-day in-clinic treatments?
Usually no. Virtual is for assessment and planning. If it turns out you’re a good candidate for an in-clinic treatment, we’ll use your consult to map the right next appointment.
What do you mean by “virtual consultation” here?
A virtual consultation is a video appointment where I review your concerns, your routine, and your goals, then build a clear home-care plan. It’s designed to save time while still giving you a real, personalized strategy.
