If you’re nervous about your first Resurface XP, you’re in good company. A lot of new faces come in with the same question: “Is this going to be intense?” The reason I’m comfortable recommending it is simple. Long-time clients describe me as “a wealth of knowledge when it comes to skin care, ” and they love that I’m realistic and honest about what your skin can handle.
Resurface XP is a resurfacing facial that mildly to moderately exfoliates and stimulates skin renewal. You should plan for temporary redness, possible light peeling, and a short recovery window, typically 1 to 7 days depending on intensity. I’ll walk you through exactly how to prepare, what happens during the 85-minute appointment, and how to handle Resurface XP aftercare in our sunny Woodland Hills climate.
Prep for Resurface XP: a simple 7-day checklist that prevents surprises
To prepare for a resurfacing facial, I keep it practical. My goal is to get you great exfoliation without pushing your skin into an irritated spiral.
- Pause strong actives as I advise. In most cases, that means taking a break from retinoids and at-home acids for several days before your appointment.
- Skip tanning and heavy sun exposure. If you hike or spend weekends outside around Topanga Canyon, protect your skin and keep it calm going in.
- Keep your barrier happy with a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturizer. No new “miracle” products the week of your service.
- Come in with a clean face if you can. If you show up with sunscreen or makeup on, it’s fine. I’ll cleanse thoroughly either way.
Quick heads-up: Let me know about recent peels, new prescriptions, a big event, or if you’ve had hyperpigmentation after facials in the past. I take that seriously, and it directly affects how aggressive I go.
Resurface XP what to expect in my room (85 minutes, step-by-step)
When you arrive, I’ll start with a quick check-in and a look at what your skin is doing right now. I don’t run “cookie-cutter, rinse and repeat” facials. If you’re dry, reactive, acne-prone, or dealing with uneven tone, I’ll choose the combination that fits your skin that day.
1) Cleanse + skin assessment
I cleanse thoroughly, then I check congestion, sensitivity, and how easily your skin flushes. This is where I decide how “mild to moderate” your first-time Resurface XP should be.
2) Double exfoliation, chosen for your skin
Resurface XP combines two advanced techniques. Depending on what you need, that can include an advanced enzyme, dermal infusion, microdermabrasion, and dermaplaning. Sensation-wise, most people notice warmth, light scratchiness with microderm, or a mild tickle with dermaplaning. Enzymes can tingle. I’m in constant communication, and I adjust in real time.
3) High frequency + light extractions (only if your skin is up for it)
If you have congestion, I’ll do light extractions and support the skin with high frequency. It should feel like a gentle buzzing. If something feels sharp or too intense, I want you to say it out loud. I’d rather pivot than “push through” and leave you irritated.
4) Mask, LED, serums, moisturizer, and SPF to finish
I finish with a mask, LED light therapy, and the right serums, moisturizer, and SPF. People often tell me they leave feeling relaxed and taken care of, and that matters. Resurfacing is results-driven, but the experience should still feel comfortable.

Resurface XP downtime: a realistic day-by-day for 1 to 7 days
Downtime varies because intensity varies. I’d rather under-promise and have you pleasantly surprised than the other way around.
- Day 0 (same day): You’ll often look pink to red, like a mild sun flush. Skin can feel warm or tight.
- Days 1 to 3: Redness usually settles. You might feel dryness, tightness, or a sandpapery texture.
- Days 3 to 7: Light flaking or peeling can show up, especially around the mouth, chin, and nose. Some people barely peel at all, and some peel in patches.
Woodland Hills note: Our dry air plus sun is a real combo after resurfacing. Plan on extra moisturizer and serious SPF, especially if you’re out near Topanga Canyon trails or running errands around Westfield Topanga.
Resurface XP aftercare that protects your glow (and prevents irritation)
Right after your facial, your skin can feel smooth and fresh, but it’s also more vulnerable. Aftercare is where you lock in results. I’m big on keeping this affordable and realistic, not an upsell situation.
For the first few days
- Gentle cleanser + bland moisturizer only. Keep it simple until your skin feels normal again.
- Mineral SPF every morning, and reapply if you’re outdoors. This is non-negotiable after resurfacing.
- No picking or scrubbing. Flakes need to shed on their own.
- Avoid heat like hot showers, saunas, and hard workouts for a short window. Heat can drag out redness.
- Hold actives (retinoids, acids, aggressive acne treatments) until I tell you it’s time to restart.
When to reach out: If you notice signs of infection, abnormal swelling, prolonged intense pain, or anything that feels “off, ” email or call me. I’d rather hear from you early than have you worry at home.
If you’re planning your next steps, I usually recommend rebooking once your skin has fully recovered and we’ve seen how you responded. Consistency is where people start getting those “your skin is glowing” comments they talk about after facials.
My best first-time Resurface XP tips for Warner Center schedules (and real life)
Here’s the insider truth I wish every first-timer heard: the best “downtime plan” is not scheduling Resurface XP the day before a big event. Give yourself a buffer. If you end up with zero peeling, great. If you peel a little, you’re not stressed about it.
I’m in Woodland Hills in the Warner Center and Topanga Canyon corridor, so it’s easy to pop in before or after work, or while you’re already out near Westfield Topanga. I also see clients coming in from Calabasas, Canoga Park, West Hills, Tarzana, and Encino who want results without a complicated routine.
